Emily’s Entourage’s (EE) Collaborative Grants support research projects that bring together multiple investigators with diverse areas of expertise to jointly tackle challenges in the development of therapeutics for individuals in the final 10% of the CF community who do not benefit from CFTR modulators, including those with rare and nonsense mutations.
These grants are awarded to teams of three or more investigators with complementary expertise to advance therapeutic development in ways that could not be achieved without a collaborative approach. The funding amount is determined by the project scope and budget. Applicants may request funding to support the project for a total of three years.
Applicant Eligibility Criteria
Institutional Eligibility
- Open to both non-profit academic and for-profit organizations such as academic research organizations, biotech companies, partnerships that span for and non-profit organizations, etc.
- Open to institutions worldwide.
- Teams may comprise investigators from a single institution or multiple institutions.
Investigator Eligibility
- There are no restrictions on citizenship or geography.
Project Eligibility
- Translational and preclinical projects are eligible. The project must seek to address an overarching, urgent scientific question. Sub-projects should be designed to elucidate various aspects of the overarching question, theme, or focus.
- Projects must include evidence that the proposed therapeutic modality works (either in a cell-based assay or in an animal model or in another suitable system).
- Proposed projects must not be supported by other sources of funding.
Team Composition
- Teams must be composed of one Principle Investigator (PI) and 2-4 co-PIs. PI serves as the single point of contact with EE during the application process.
- Inter-institutional collaborations are strongly encouraged.
- Each lab receives at least 10% of the total grant budget.
Deadline
- LOIs are due by September 15, 2023, at 11:59 p.m. PT.
Key Dates
- September 15, 2023: Letters of Intent (LOI) submission deadline
- October 15, 2023: Finalist teams notified
- December 15, 2023: Full applications due
- March 1, 2024 Notification of awards
- April 1, 2024: Award start date
LOI Guidelines
LOIs are to be submitted to research@emilysentourage.org. The LOI will require the following information:
- Principal Investigator
- Name, institution, title, and contact info
- Project Title
- Project Summary/Abstract
- limit 350 words
- Project Description
- Limit four-page, specific aims and high-level description of the experimental approach, milestones and timeline.
- Literature cited (does not count against page limit).
- Team Description
- List all co-Principal Investigators (co-PIs), and collaborators (name, institution, title, contact info). For the PI and co-PIs, provide the following:
- 1-3 sentences describing their role in the project.
- NIH-format biosketch (limit 5 pages per investigator)
- List any existing collaborations between co-PIs, including existing funding support for collaborative projects.
- List all co-Principal Investigators (co-PIs), and collaborators (name, institution, title, contact info). For the PI and co-PIs, provide the following:
- Collaborative Science Statement
- Limit 1 page
- Why is this project a team science project?
- Describe how each individual investigator’s expertise will be leveraged to expedite research and development.
- How will the team work together?
- Describe the plan for team structure, communications, and shared resources.
- Budget overview
- On the template provided (this spreadsheet is view only, please be sure to create and work off your own copy of the spreadsheet).
- Award Terms
- The funding amount is determined by the project scope and budget. Applicants may request funding to support the project for a total of three years.
- The budget and duration requested for the grant must match a realistic estimate of the cost and timeline for the proposed work.
- The requested funding should be divided amongst team members in a manner proportional to the actual cost of the work carried out by each investigator for the project. The budget limit includes both direct and indirect costs, with indirect costs not to exceed 10% of the direct costs.
- Each year’s funding will be contingent on sufficient scientific progress as presented at the 11-month project review.
